Warwick

On our direct line is Charles PRATT (1817-1878) [5252] Charles trained as a shoemaker or cordwainer. His children Joseph (1851) and Louisa (1854) were baptised in St Nicholas Church Warwick where on their baptism records he is given as Sexton and for the baptisms of his children George Guy (1860-1893 direct line), William (1864), James (1867) he is given as Parish Clerk. His occupation on the 1861 census is given as Parish Clerk which implies that this was his main work however on the 1871 census he is a Post Office Messenger. His brother-in-law George Guy STANDLEY [5442] was a Sexton on the 1891 census.

Once called the “Low Church” as it was down hill from St Mary's or the “High Church”. It is built on the site of a Norman church which may have replaced an even older church. The tower was causing concern by the mid 18th century and was taken down A local architect Thomas JOHNSON rebuilt it to his own design. In 1779. A vestry was added and the chancel rebuilt in 1869 to designs by John GIBSON.
